The mysterious atmosphere which enshrouds Ca’ Dario is perceivable in the whole space around it. Its strange curse started with the first owner’s daughter, Marietta Dario, who commited suicide because of a financial crisis of her husband. Then, in the early 19th century, a diamond merchant, Arbit Abdoll, was reduced to bankruptcy and died in misery after he bought the palace. In the last two centuries Filippo Giordano delle Lanze was hit by a candelabra by his lover; Nicoletta Ferrari died in a car accident; and Raul Gardini, an Italian politician involved in the Tangentopoli, bribery scandal, shot himself. This macabre coincidence makes Ca’ Dario one of the most unnerving places in Venice.
The installation will be located along Ramo de Ca’ Dario, on both sides of the alley. Memento is activated only when these conditions are satisfied: it is dark, it is cold, and the user is alone.
The user could be anyone who crosses the alley alone.
The mood is ghostly, but not spooky; it’s not an horror house but a sort of memorial of past presences.
