To study the behavior of people walking in the alley we created an interactive visual sketch with Processing which allowed us to simulate their walk through the alley and show the different behaviors of the installation depending on the time of the day and the number of people there.
In the sketch there are 5 sensor zones, each labeled with the letters A and B, and an icon of a telephone.
The two sensor zones are placed at each entry to the alley to let the system recognize when a person enters or exits.
The system recognizes a user’s passage from A to B when entering the alley, and a passage from B to A when exing. In this way the system counts how many people are in the alley, and sets the behavior of our installation accordingly.
The fifth sensor zone is near the telephone. We wanted the telephone to ring only when a person alone there.
In the download page you can play with the Processing sketch to understand the logic of the installation.
Move the two people inside the alley with your mouse and see what happens in relation to the time and the number of people you’re moving in.
